  • Democrat; Cuomo is widely considered an activist attorney general.

  • In 2006, Cuomo defeated Jeanine Pirro (R) 58-39% to win election to the post.

  • Born Dec. 6, 1957

  • Graduated from Fordham University in 1979 (B.A.) and Albany Law School in 1982 (J.D.)

  • He's the eldest the son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo (1983-94), a liberal Democrat.

  • Cuomo married Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, in 1990. The couple divorced in 2003.

  • Worked as an aide to his father's campaigns and administration in the 1980s before being appointed to head the New York City Commission on the Homeless by Mayor David Dinkins (1989-93).

  • In 1997, President Clinton named Cuomo U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He resigned to run for Governor of New York in 2002 but lost resoundingly in the Democrat primary to State Comptroller Carl McCall.
