State AGs

McCain tops AG endorsements as Feb. 5 primaries loom

John McCain
Only a handful of state attorneys general were prepared to go out on a limb for a presidential candidate less than a week before 'Super-Dooper Tuesday' - and there weren't many surprises amongst those who did.

Prominent east-coast Democrats like Andrew Cuomo of New York, Patrick Lynch of Rhode Island and Richard Blumenthal have broken fairly cleanly for New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Surprisingly, Sen. Barack Obama pulled off two endorsements in what should be considered Clinton turf - from Vermont AG Bill Sorell and Maryland AG Doug Gansler.

A group of Western and Midwestern Republicans that includes Mark Shurtleff of Utah, Wayne Stenehjem of North Dakota and Steve Carter of Indiana came out early in 2007 for Sen. John McCain.

On the Democratic side Obama has proved popular early on with midwestern Democrats like Lisa Madigan of Illinois (his home state) and Tom Miller of neighboring Iowa.

Several Republican AG endorsements have already been knocked out of the race, although tellingly no state Democratic AG seems to have endorsed John Edwards at any point in his run.

The most popular GOP drop-out was Fred Thompson, who was backed by Texas AG Greg Abbott and Virginia AG Robert McDonnell - both of whom could make re-endorsements before Feb. 4.

And spare a thought for Michigan AG Mike Cox, often considered a rising political star in his own state. Cox boarded the McCain train last March with the six other Republican state AGs but then bailed on his state campaign when it lurched off the rails last fall. Since then McCain has claimed the lead and Cox has refused to re-endorse any other candidate.

Below is a list of state attorneys general who have publicly endorsed a candidate for president in 2008.

Andrew Cuomo, D-NY -- Clinton

Rob McKenna, R-WA -- McCain
Robert McDonnell, R-VA -- Thompson
Greg Abbott, R-TX -- Thompson
