TOPEKA -- Incoming Kansas Attorney General Stephen Six has apparently put the state's ongoing water dispute with neighboring Nebraska near the top of his to-do list.

One of Six's first actions after being sworn in last week as the state's third AG in a year was to write Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning seeking a solution. The two states are arguing over Nebraska's alleged over-use of waters from the bi-state Republican River.

Two months ago the state of Kansas demanded that Nebraska shut down pumps and pay damages for overuse of water from the river. It claims Nebraska has failed to comply with the Compact and 2002 Settlement that set conditions for use of the waterway.

Six's letter to Bruning said he expects "tangible action" and "real solutions" from his GOP counterpart on the issue. "Nebraska has not held up its end of the agreement and has consistently used more that its share of the water," Six said.

"If Nebraska will not take action, we will ask the Court to impose remedies that ensure Kansans get the water they deserve," he warned.
