TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Legal Newsline) -- Gov. Charlie Crist signed House Bill 443 giving 9-year-old Marissa Amora compensation of $18.2 million for injuries she received in 2000 as a 2-year-old child in an abusive and negligent home. Crist thanked former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth, who is now the head of the Department of Children and Family Services for the part he played in the matter. A court found the DCFS negligent in releasing Marissa to an abusive home. DCFS Secretary Butterworth chose not to appeal the decision to the Florida Supreme Court, paving the way for the matter to go to the Florida State Legislature. Even after a court awards damages, all decisions on compensating individuals injured by the actions of a state agency must go through the state legislature if the amount is over $200,000. Lawmakers decide if the victim will be compensated. Marissa - whose injuries left her brain-injured, confined her to a wheelchair and using a feeding tube - was one of 11 people the state legislature granted compensation to this term. The Republican governor met with Marissa's family and signed the bill compensating her as part of Tallahassee Tuesday at the Governor's Mansion. He uses the day to meet with citizens and hear their thoughts on Florida's future. From Legal Newsline: Reach reporter Lin Young by e-mail at linyoung10@gmail.com.
