NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Legal Newsline)-A $25 litigation tax on Tennessee residents involved in civil and criminal court proceedings would be allowed under legislation heading to Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen.
The state Legislature approved the legislation that would allow county commissioners to levy the fee.
But before county commissions could enact the tax, it would have to be approved by a two-thirds vote of a county's commissioners.
The money would be allowed to only go toward either courthouse security or renovations or jail construction projects.
Tennessee's 95 counties currently have authority to implement up to a $10 tax litigation tax.
