SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Legal Newsline)-Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Friday that the Cook County sheriff's decision not to serve eviction notices is well within the law.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced this week that he will direct his staff not to serve residential eviction notices.
Dart has said many of the people his officers were serving eviction notices to were Chicago-area renters who had no idea their landlords had fallen behind on their payments.
In an interview with Chicago Public Radio, Madigan said Illinois law requires a tenant get 120 days notice of eviction.
"People will be required to get the legal notice that they should've gotten before they were thrown out of their homes," Madigan said. "It's a good thing that the sheriff is going to work to follow the law."
