Cuomo keeping possible Senate interest close to chest

ALBANY, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is not showing away any intention to take over future Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.

Clinton was appointed to the post by President-elect Barack Obama, who defeated her in the Democratic primary. She is currently serving her second term as a U.S. Senator, having been re-elected in 2006 to a six-year term.

Gov. David Paterson has the task of appointing a replacement. Paterson is, himself, a replacement, having taken the position when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Cuomo's predecessor as attorney general, resigned amid a scandal involving a prostitution ring.

"It is entirely up to him," Cuomo said Thursday, according to Newsday. "I have a job. I have my hands full doing it."

The report said Cuomo would not deny that he would turn the seat down if offered to him.

"It's a little presumptuous to say, 'I'm not interested,'" he said.

Cuomo recently celebrated his 51st birthday and previously served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Bill Clinton from 1997-2001.

He is the son of former New York governor Mario Cuomo and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2002.
