MONTPELIER, Vt. (Legal Newsline) - ExxonMobil will pay $150,000 to reimburse the State of Vermont for the cleanup of several of its service stations in the state.
Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell made the announcement Friday. He alleged Exxon received reimbursement from its insurers for costs that were paid by the state Petroleum Cleanup Fund, which is used to cover the costs of spills not covered by insurance.
The $150,000 will be paid to the PCF.
"This is a good settlement that will put money back in the fund for other necessary environmental cleanups in Vermont," Sorrell said.
Exxon had settled claims with insurers for petroleum cleanups between 1999-2003. Sorrell alleged some portion of the settlements should have been attributed to cleanups funded by the PCF.
