SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - Despite soaring popularity, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that he has no plans to seek higher office.

At a public work session attended by him and his executive staff, Cuomo said he has no plans to challenge Gov. David Paterson next year.

"I hope the people think that I've been delivering for them as attorney general," Cuomo said, according to a report by WRGB in Albany. "I've been trying my best and my only plan is to run for re-election as attorney general."

Siena College Research Institute released the results of a poll earlier this week that showed Cuomo would easily defeat Paterson, 67 percent to 17 percent. A January poll performed by Siena had Paterson with a two-point lead.

"(I'm) very happy to be attorney general, and it heartens me to know the people feel good about me as attorney general," Cuomo said, according to the report.

The work session was held at Schenectady County Community College. Cuomo has recently gained national attention in his fight against financial institutions that received taxpayer money in a federal bailout and gave large bonuses to executives.
