BATON ROUGE, La. (Legal Newsline)-Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has been asked by the state's governor to look into a possible lawsuit over the use of a popular New Orleans Saints football team phrase.

Specifically, Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal wants to know who owns the rights to the cheer "Who Dat," the rallying cry often heard at Saints' games. The chant - "Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints" - is often shortened to "Who Dat."

The governor's request this weekend to the attorney general follows the National Football League's cease-and-desist letters to some T-shirt makers, demanding that they stop selling items with the Saints' cheer.

On Monday afternoon, the attorney general was in a conference call with officials from the National Football League, said Caldwell spokeswoman Jennifer Roche.

WhoDat Inc. also claims ownership of the slogan. The company is owned by Saints fans and brothers Sal and Steve Monistere.

The Saints are preparing to make their first Super Bowl appearance since their inception in 1966. The Saints' big game against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV is on Feb. 7 in Miami.
