WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline)-A California congresswoman on Tuesday ended speculation that she might jump into the race for state attorney general.

But rather than enter the crowded field vying to succeed fellow Democrat Jerry Brown as the Golden State's chief legal officer, U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier said she has decided to remain in the House of Representatives.

"I am convinced it is the right thing to do for my family, and I believe I can best serve my constituents by remaining in Congress and working hard on consumer protection, financial reform, jobs, and health care," Speier said.

Speier, a longtime former state lawmaker, said last week that she was considering a run for attorney general after a poll indicated she had an advantage over other Democratic candidates.

Elected to Congress in 2008 to replace longtime Democratic Rep. Tom Lantos after his death, Speier is a member of the House Financial Services Committee, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global warming.

"My constituents have given me an extraordinary opportunity to protect the environment, the elderly, and a woman's right to choose," Speier said. "I am grateful to serve in Congress, and I do not take a single day for granted."
