SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)-The Democratic race for California attorney general is a wide-open contest, a poll released Tuesday by one of the campaigns indicates.

The poll of 500 likely voters conducted this week shows that 41 percent of Democrats remain undecided about who they want to succeed Democrat Jerry Brown as the Golden State's chief legal officer.

With five months still remaining in the primary campaign, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris and Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo have significant leads in the race, the poll indicates.

Harris is the clear frontrunner, with 19 percent support. Trailing is Deldadillo with 14 percent and state Assemblymen Ted Lieu with 7 percent.

Further back is Facebook executive Chris Kelly with 4 percent support and state Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico with 2 percent support.

The poll also shows that Harris and Lieu would be able to beat the likely Republican AG nominee, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley, in November's general election.

Against Cooley in hypothetical general election matchups, Harris leads 33 percent to 30 percent, while Lieu leads Cooley 29 percent to 28 percent. The poll shows Delgadillo losing by one point, 29 percent to 30 percent.

The poll was conducted by Culver City, Calif.-based Goodwin Simon Strategic Research on behalf of the Lieu campaign. The poll's margin of error was not provided.
