HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is urging the Department of Public Utility Control to reject a request for a rate increase by Connecticut Light & Power.
The 5 percent rate reduction is expected to follow the paying off of bonds related to deregulation early next year. CL&P, however, has proposed a rate hike of $210 million, which is approximately 5 percent, that would wipe out that decrease, Blumenthal says.
"CL&P is pulling the rug from under severely strapped consumers and businesses who desperately need relief from Connecticut's record electricity rates - highest in the continental United States," Blumenthal said.
"I urge DPUC to reject this coldhearted and uncalled for rate increase, denying consumers rate reductions they expect and deserve. The central reason for these higher rates is in effect to raise profit levels to 10.5 percent, instead of presently lower acceptable levels."
