Ohio AG sues over alleged Craigslist scam

DeWine

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced lawsuits on Friday against two Ohio residents who allegedly ran a Craigslist scam offering to sell video game systems and video games, phones and phone cards.

Nicholas Lamb and Robert White allegedly offered PlayStation 3 systems, PS3 games, phone cards and Boost Mobile phones via Craigslist posts that primarily targeted out-of-state consumers. Their posts allegedly indicated that they were Ohio residents, but told potential buyers that they had previously lived in the buyers' states to gain trust.

Lamb and White allegedly requested that payment be made through a wire transfer service like MoneyGram or Western Union, and then did not deliver the products or provide refunds after the payment was made.

"These individuals took advantage of unsuspecting consumers," DeWine said. "They posted hundreds of items for sale on Craigslist and accepted payment from dozens of consumers but never delivered the products. Simply put, they committed a scam."

The lawsuits charge Lamb and White with multiple violations of Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act, including the failure to deliver and advertising products without having possession of the products. DeWine is seeking permanent injunctive relief, full restitution for consumers and civil penalties.

DeWine's office received 29 consumer complaints against Lamb and 27 against White. DeWine's office said there may be more victims because both men allegedly made hundreds of posts on Craigslist.
