Pa. legislator modifies venue reform bill, says trial lawyers prompted change

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Legal Newsline) - The Pennsylvania state legislator who introduced legislation to prevent venue shopping has changed his bill.

Rep. Bryan Cutler, R-Lancaster, said he is responding to criticism by trial lawyers, who claimed the language of his original bill was unconstitutional.

Cutler's original bill limited the venue of personal injury cases to counties where the incident occurred.

The change to the proposed law will read that the venue in personal injury actions against corporations and "similar entities" to recover damages may be brought only in the plaintiff's county of residence, the county where the cause of action occurred, or the domicile county of the business.

The bill (House Bill No. 1976) has been referred to committee.
