CLEVELAND (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Wickliffe-based Murphy & Son Inc., a roofing business that allegedly violated Ohio consumer law.

Murphy & Son allegedly entices consumers to agree to pay the company to fix minor roofing issues such as caulking. When the business visits the consumers' homes, the company allegedly finds major issues that would cost much more to repair. After the repairs, the roofs allegedly continue to leak or have other defects related to installation.

"This company offers to repair leaky roofs or provide similar services, but it routinely does a poor job, ignores consumer complaints and fails to obtain proper permits or licenses," DeWine said. "We've made several attempts to resolve these issues but the problems remain."

DeWine's suit alleges that Murphy & Son broke the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act by performing shoddy work, failing to correct the work and by accepting deposits for work without having obtained the necessary permits. The lawsuit seeks civil penalties, injunctive relief and consumer restitution.
