HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen has requested that a Seattle company provide his office with more information about specific property tax appeal services offered to consumers in Connecticut.

Officials in New Britain challenged the accuracy of information that ValueAppeal LLC provided in the form of letters that were allegedly sent to local property owners. The letters stated that the properties had been over-assessed, calculated how much they had been over-assessed, including any tax overpayment, and offered to process an assessment appeal for a one-time $99 fee.

Jepsen wrote the letter to ValueAppeal's chief executive officer on Tuesday requesting information about any business it has done in Connecticut since January 1. Jepsen also asked the company to explain how it comes up with the over-assessed properties and for it to describe the services it provides in exchange for the fee.

Jepsen also requested to know how many Connecticut residents had been solicited, how many residents used the service and the number of people who were successful in appealing their assessments for local taxes.

"This information is important to help my office evaluate whether Connecticut residents are being offered valid business services for the fees charged or, instead, are being deceived," Jepsen said.

ValueAppeal LLC was asked to respond to Jepsen's letter by the end of the month.
