JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Legal Newsline) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced a lawsuit on Wednesday against the provider of a wedding venue for allegedly canceling wedding ceremonies without refunding consumers.
The lawsuit resulted after Koster's Consumer Protection Division received over 50 complaints against West Bottoms Hospitality LLC and its owner, Ryan Ronney Crowell. The defendants allegedly contracted with consumers from at least September 2010 through April 2011 to rent out the historic Stowe Building in the West Bottoms district of Kansas City for wedding ceremonies and related services.
Despite delays in the process of renovation, West Bottoms Hospitality allegedly promised consumers that renovations would be completed on time for scheduled receptions and weddings. Consumers allegedly received no word of the delays and the city eventually shut down construction when the company failed to obtain the required permits.
West Bottoms Hospitality allegedly failed to refund consumers more than $40,000 for events that were cancelled. Koster's lawsuit seeks injunctions to prohibit further violations of the law, in addition to full restitution for consumers and civil penalties.
