TALLAHASSEE — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office has issued a subpoena to Lorex as part of a consumer protection investigation into possible foreign spying risks, the company’s relationship with Dahua Technology and whether Lorex misled Florida consumers about the privacy and security of Lorex cameras and apps.

“Florida families deserve straight answers about who touches their data and who controls the code in the devices they put in their homes,” Uthmeier said. “The Chinese Communist Party cannot be allowed to spy on American children. Florida will not tolerate it, and we will hold bad actors accountable.”

The AG’s office says Lorex sells in-home and in- business cameras, including baby cams, nanny cams, dog cams and doorbell cams.

“This is unacceptable, it’s a national security issue, and it will not be tolerated,” Uthmeier said.

The subpoena seeks documents and information related to Lorex’s ownership and corporate structure, including any intermediate owners and affiliates; the company’s relationships and contracts with third parties involved in manufacturing, firmware, mobile apps, and software updates; and the origins of components used in Lorex camera products sold in Florida.

Uthmeier’s office also is demanding records identifying where software updates originate, who has source-code access for camera firmware, the company’s cloud platform providers and data center locations for U.S. consumer data, and any security vulnerabilities, breaches, or investigations involving Lorex devices and software — as well as steps the company has taken to remediate such issues.

In addition, the subpoena requires production of documents related to privacy and security marketing claims, product FAQs, FCC filings, the time period and volume of Florida sales, and contracts with U.S. and Florida retailers that sell Lorex products.

This investigation is ongoing, and Uthmeier’s office says the issuance of a subpoena is not a determination of wrongdoing by Lorex.

Consumers who believe they were misled about the privacy or security of a product ask asked to file a complaint at MyFloridaLegal.com or by calling 1-866-9-NO-SCAM.
