MARSHALL — A federal judge in Texas has concluded Stratasys and Bambu Lab might benefit from additional mediation following a patent trial that resulted in a multi-million dollar judgment.

On September 17, Stratasys secured a $27.6 million jury verdict in its patent infringement litigation against Bambu Lab.

Following a week-long trial in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, the jury found that Bambu Lab infringed asserted claims of four U.S. patents and rejected Bambu Lab’s challenges to the validity of those claims.

The Jury found that defendants Shenzhen Tuozhu Technology, Shanghai Lunkuo Technology, Bambu Lab had willfully infringed Claims for U.S. Patent Nos. 9,421,713; 7,555,357; 9,168,698; and 10,556,381.

The patents in the trial focused on the four patents, two of which centered on a three-dimensional printer with force detection; a patent for an additive manufacturing method using purge towers; and a patent for a method for building three-dimensional objects using extrusion-based layered deposition systems.

Jurors awarded damages for all four patents in the amounts of $14.2 million, 10.6 million and 2.8 million, court records show.

The verdict represents an important milestone in Stratasys’s broader efforts to protect and enforce the innovations underlying modern fused deposition modeling 3D-printing technology, according to the global law firm representing the company, McDermott, Will & Schulte.

On September 18, a judgment was entered affirming the jury’s verdict, court records show.

Stratasys has filed two patent cases against Bambu Labs. Earlier in the year, the court had consolidated the cases “for all pretrial purposes.” A second trial is still slated to take place.

On September 23, Judge Rodney Gilstrap issued an order stating that following the trial, the court “concluded that the parties … might benefit from additional mediation.”

“Accordingly, the Court ORDERS the parties to mediate the above-captioned cases as soon as practical,” the order states.
